Beyond Pretty Photos // The Beauty of Portraits

I used to view portraiture as pretty photos. I had no idea of the power of what these photos can portray and the effect they can have on people. Throughout my life I’ve had friends who were willing to go out and do photo shoots for hours with me. It was such an enjoyable process. I loved seeing their reaction to the photos at the end, so I thought that this must be the reason why I enjoyed it so much. For years I saw it this way and I failed to look for a deeper reason as to why I was so fascinated with taking portraits of people.

Every single time I take a portrait of someone I focus on their uniqueness. Since the majority of my portrait photographs have been my close friends, I have spent a lot time with them, I am familiar with who they are, I am aware of their fears, their struggles, their strengths, and their talents. I like to take all of those elements and put them aside while I am photographing them. I strive to capture the natural side of them, simply the beautiful person that they are.

Portraits taken by a photographer reflect who that person is. How others see them, not how the person views themselves. That is the simplicity in it, we are able to show parts of ourselves to someone and they are able to put it into one single photograph. Each of us need to learn to understand that we hold so much beauty in order to slowly become indifferent about our flaws.

That is the beauty of portraiture. You place trust in the photographer, you open yourself up and share parts of your life with them and then allow them to photograph how they see you. It is amazing the impact it has when I can show someone how wonderful they look that day instead of just telling them they look wonderful. It has more value to them when they can see it and not just in the mirror but through my eyes.

You have a story to tell.

You have faced battles in your life.

You have made an impact on the world in some way.

You have passions.

You have fears.

You have bad days.

You are important to the people you have in your life.

You are loved more than you know.

It is the stories and experiences that have moulded us into who we are and it is so amazing to always be able to come back to these photos and to realize how far you’ve come. I truly accept and appreciate you for showing up and trusting me to capture how I see you in that moment. I can not express how much these sessions mean to me, thank you for opening up your heart to me and for showing me the messy, tangled, wonderful, honest person you are.

Thank you for being here.
