7 Ways Photography School Changed Me

I want to start by saying that it is very difficult to narrow down seven ways photography school has impacted my life forever. School is a chapter in my life that has helped mould my opinions, discover who I am, allowed me to grow so much as a photographer, build friendships and creates memories that will be stuck in my brain until I die. As much as I would love to write a list of one thousand ways school has impacted my life, nobody would want to sit down and read that so this leaves us with my attempt at writing a very condescend list.

Here we go.

WARNING! The examples below are slightly over exaggerated.

1. I Now See the World in Highlights and Shadows

Before Photography School Monica: “The sun is really bright out today.”

After Photography School Monica: “It is mid-day sunlight so the shadows to highlight ratio is going to be 16:1. I would need to have a low ISO and fast shutter speed if I was wanting to shoot at a 1.4 aperture.”

2. Every Photograph on the Wall Is Now Automatically Examined

Before Photography School Monica: “This is a cool photo to have in a bathroom.”

After Photography School Monica: “Time of day this bathroom landscape photo was shot was around 7:06 pm in the summertime. Horizon line is placed in a nice spot, I like the choice of aperture and this frame really compliments the photograph.”

3. I Believe In Community over Competition

Before Photography School Monica: “I have one amazing secret location spot and no one can steal it from me.”

After Photography School Monica: “Let’s all be friends and share location spots! That way we will all have a variety of location ideas, save time location scouting, and our photos won’t be taken in the exact same spot every time!”

4. My New Motto is DO IT NOW

Before Photography School Monica: “I have a week to edit this photo, I’ll do it later.”

After Photography School Monica: “Okay, I am going to make a pot of coffee, finish this project that is due next month, edit this entire wedding, and brush my teeth all at the same time.”

5. I Understand How Much Goes Into a Photography Business

Before Photography School Monica: “I like taking pictures, yay I have a photography business! This will be easy, I get to take pictures for a living!”

After Photography School Monica: “Okay so in order for me to have a successful photography business I must be knowledgeable in photoshop, marketing, communication, writing, blogging, technical stuff, money management, how to price my services, how to make people feel comfortable, organization, social media, and the list goes on. On top of that, I need to improve my skills at taking photographs.”

6. I’ve Realized Comparing My Work is a Waste of Time

Before Photography School Monica: “I’m going to follow 900 other photographers on Instagram to give me inspiration. *instead of giving me inspiration it just made me constantly compare my work to the pros and I was left feeling discouraged.*

After Photography School Monica: “We are all so unique, we all have different strengths and weaknesses, and we are all on a constant journey so why would I compare my process to another person’s?”

7. I’ve Changed My Attitude Towards School

Before Photography School Monica: “I am way too tired to get up and go to school (which I despise).”

After Photography School Monica: “7 AM WAKIN UP IN THE MORNING GOTTA GET FRESH GOTTA GO DOWNSTAIRS GOTTA HAVE MY SMOOTHIE AND SEE ALL MY FRIENDS/TEACHERS THAT I HAVE A BLAST WITH AND LEARN ABOUT A TOPIC THAT I LOVE!”
